On making a pre-arranged appointment with the centre, on arrival you will be met by one of the staff at the centre whose role is to look after you immediate needs and determine the service you require. A discussion will take place about the choices you have.
Sexual Offences Investigation Trained Officers (SOITS)
If you chose to report your crime, North Yorkshire Police has a special team of police officers called SOIT officers. These police officers have been given specialist training to deal with victims of rape and sexual assault.
North Yorkshire Police treat all reports of rape and sexual assault seriously. Victims will be treated with dignity and respect.
If you chose to report to the police, Bridge House will still offer you the same support as if you chose not to report.
Forensic Medical Examiners (FMEs)
We have specially trained FMEs who can, on appointment come to the centre to see you. The team includes both female and male Forensic Medical Examiners. Medical examinations take place in our fully equipped medical suite designed to protect your privacy and dignity – prior to any medical examination the Doctor or Nurse will speak to you about what has happened and explain the process of the examination.
The purpose of this examination is to obtain any forensic evidence possible from you. Advice and guidance will also be offered in relation to any health concerns after a rape or sexual assault.
Emergency contraception can be provided at the centre along with a pregnancy test which will be discussed between you and the trained medical examiner.
Advice and Screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections
You will be given information and where your consent is obtained we can complete a referral to the Sexual Health Clinic for you.
Independent Sexual Violence Advisors
After your initial contact at Bridge House the staff there will discuss the ISVA service with you. ISVAs offer longer term emotional and practical support. Your ISVA will be able to help you come to terms with what has happened to you, and should you decide to report to the Police, your ISVA will be the link between you and the Police Investigation.
Your ISVA will provide the support which is best and right for you.
The staff at Bridge House will be able to discuss with you the option of being signposted on to other agencies for counselling support. Links to some of these agencies can be found under the LINKS section.
